Belgian bluestone is a highly durable natural stone with a high resistance to frost, UV, pollution, rain, and wind; a highly attractive stone for use in a wide range or exterior and interior projects.
Belgian bluestone was created 350 million years ago when the sea covered the southern half of what is now Belgium. Belgian bluestone is a sedimentary rock formed from layers of accumulated sediment. The water was relatively low in the area, and as a result, living organisms called crinoids (animals with limestone skeletons left behind in the seabed) were at high levels in this area.
As a result, Belgian bluestone is characterised by the fossils and calcite veins and crystals present in the stone. Mainly crinoids but also coral and shells are clearly visible in Belgian bluestone which gives the stone is unique character; every piece of stone is wholly unique. The more visible the fossilised marine life the more desirable and valuable the stone.
Owning Belgian bluestone means owning a piece of natural history created 350 million years ago.
Bluestone offers something completely different to engineered stone with each piece incorporating its own unique natural history and its own unique character. This beautiful natural stone is more than just a component of any project, it’s a piece of our planet’s natural history.
